Authentic Silk: Real vs Fake
How to Authenticate 100% Mulberry Silk
Known as “Soft Gold,” silk was historically as precious as the metal. Recognize real silk by its soft glow and smooth, cool feel. We guide you through easy authenticity silk checks—from looking and touching to burn and chemical tests—so you can shop with peace of mind.
Why we need to Verify Authentic Silk

Don’t Let “Fake Silk” Tarnish Your Brand’s Hard-Earned Reputation
In today’s market, the term “silk” is often used loosely. Many products labeled as silk are, in fact, blends or synthetic satin made from polyester. While these alternatives may come with a lower price tag upfront, the long-term cost to your brand can be devastating.
Damaged Customer Trust & Negative Reviews
Imagine your customer receiving a “silk” pillowcase they purchased from you, only to find it causes skin irritation, lacks the promised hypoallergenic benefits? Immediate loss of trust, negative reviews, and costly returns. Authentic Mulberry Silk, by its nature, delivers on its promises of smoothness, strength, and skin-friendliness.
Inconsistent Quality & Unreliable Performance
Blended or synthetic fabrics cannot replicate the unique structure of silk that provides its signature low friction and moisture-retaining properties. When you market a product for “reducing hair frizz” or “preventing sleep wrinkles,” only Authentic Silk can consistently deliver these results. Inferior materials lead to inconsistent performance, undermining your product’s core marketing claims.
The Ethical & Transparency Dilemma
Modern consumers are increasingly conscious about what their products are made of. Marketing a blend as “silk” can lead to accusations of greenwashing and dishonesty. Using OEKO-TEX® certified Authentic Silk provides a transparent, verifiable story you can share with your customers, building a reputation for integrity.
How to Verify Authentic Silk
The Touch & Sound Test (A Subjective Guide)
While high-quality silk is renowned for its uniquely soft-yet-dense texture and a characteristic “scroop” sound when crumpled, please note that this test is one of the less reliable methods.
Why? Modern manufacturing has become exceptionally advanced. Many high-quality synthetic fabrics can now closely mimic the luxurious feel and even the distinctive sound of real silk.
Our Verdict: Trust your senses as an initial guide, but be aware that this method can be misleading on its own. We recommend using it as a preliminary check rather than a definitive proof of authenticity.
The Burn Test (The Most Reliable Indicator)
For centuries, the burn test has been considered the most accurate at-home method to distinguish genuine silk from its imitations. Unlike texture or sound, the fundamental chemical composition of silk is nearly impossible for synthetics to replicate.
Important Safety Warning:
This test involves an open flame. Your safety is our priority. Please exercise extreme caution.
Always conduct the test in a well-ventilated area, away from any flammable materials (curtains, paper, alcohol, etc.).
Have a bowl of water, a damp cloth, or a fire extinguisher ready and within reach.
Use tweezers or forceps to hold the thread—keep your fingers at a safe distance.
Keep children and pets away from the testing area.
Synthetic Fiber (Polyester) Will:
- Smell: Give off a sharp, chemical plastic smell.
- Burn: Melt, drip, and burn quickly.
- Residue: Form a hard, dark plastic bead that won't crumble.
Genuine Mulberry Silk Will:
- Smell: Emit a distinct odor of burnt hair or feathers.
- Burn: Burn slowly and will self-extinguish when removed from the flame.
- Residue: Form brittle, black beads that crumble easily to ash between your fingers.
Conclusion:
The combination of a self-extinguishing flame, the smell of burning hair, and crumbly black ash is the definitive signature of pure silk. While the Touch & Sound test can be subjective, the Burn Test provides a much more reliable, science-based confirmation of your fabric’s authenticity.
The Bleach Test (A Chemical Proof)
For a conclusive and fascinating test, you can use common household bleach (e.g., Clorox). This method is based on a simple chemical reaction: the sodium hypochlorite in bleach dissolves protein fibers. Since silk is made of protein, genuine silk will completely dissolve or disintegrate in bleach, while synthetic fibers will not.
Important Safety Warning:
Bleach is a corrosive chemical. Handle with extreme care to avoid injury or damage.
Wear protective gloves and avoid contact with skin and eyes.
Work in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhaling fumes.
Use a glass container (like a small jar) that you do not use for food purposes. Do not use metal containers.
Keep bleach away from children and pets.
Never test on the final product or a large piece of fabric. Only use a few threads or a very small swatch.
Synthetic Fibers (Polyester, Nylon, Rayon, etc.):
The threads will remain largely intact. They may change color or be bleached, but they will not dissolve. You might see some degradation over a very long time (hours), but the immediate, rapid dissolution is unique to protein fibers like silk and wool.
Genuine Silk:
You will see bubbles forming around the threads. Within 3 to 10 minutes, the silk threads will begin to swell, break apart, and fully dissolve in the solution. The bleach may also turn slightly yellowish.
Conclusion:
The complete and relatively rapid dissolution of the thread is a definitive chemical proof of pure silk. This test, combined with the Burn Test, provides a near-laboratory level of confidence in authenticating your silk fabric at home.
The Momme (MM)
Silk's Unique Measure of Quality & Luxury
Discover how this unique measurement defines the durability, feel, and value of your silk.
Momme (pronounced “moe-mee” and often abbreviated as MM) is the traditional unit of measurement used specifically for silk. Unlike cotton which is measured by thread count, Momme measures the weight in pounds of a piece of silk 100 yards long and 45 inches wide. Think of it not as thickness, but as density. A higher Momme number means the silk fabric is woven with more threads, resulting in a denser, heavier, and more robust fabric.
So higher Momme fabric is more expensive and represents a greater value due to its longevity.

Why Momme Matters to You?
Understanding Momme is crucial because it directly correlates to the quality, durability, and how the silk feels and drapes.
Durability: Higher Momme silk, being more densely woven, is far more durable and resistant to tearing or snagging. It will last significantly longer.
Opacity: Lower Momme silk (like 12-16 MM) can be semi-sheer, while higher Momme (19+ MM) is more opaque, offering better coverage.
Drape & Feel: Higher Momme silk has a more substantial, luxurious feel and a beautifully fluid, heavy drape that clings elegantly to the body.

Employing Momme Unit Differentiation for Silk Verification
The formula to calculate the weight per square meter of 100% silk fabric is: Width (in meters) x Weight (in momme) 1 momme = 4.3056 grams /㎡
Example for 16mm 114cm width = 1.14 x 16 x 4.3056 ≈ 78.53g
Critical Notes
- Requires precise weighing instruments (error margin < 0.1 g)
- Inapplicable to unlabeled/unwoven silk fibers
- Complementary to chemical/combustion tests for blended fabrics

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Authentic Silk
What is the difference between 'Silk' and 'Satin'?
This is the most critical question. “Satin” is a weave, while “Silk” is a fiber. Authentic Silk is made from natural protein fibers produced by silkworms. Satin can be made from silk, but it is more commonly made from synthetic materials like polyester. So, while all silk satin is luxurious, not all satin is silk. Our products are made from 100% Authentic Mulberry Silk.
How can I be sure you are selling Authentic Silk and not a blend?
We offer complete transparency. First, we provide detailed material specifications and certifications (like OEKO-TEX®). Second, we encourage you to perform the industry-standard burn test on the free swatch kit we provide. Genuine silk will smell like burnt hair and turn to brittle ash, while synthetics will melt and smell like plastic. Your verification is our proof.
What does 'Momme Weight' (MM) mean, and why is it important for Authentic Silk?
Momme (MM) is the unit that measures the density and weight of silk fabric. A higher momme number means a denser, heavier, and more durable silk. For example, our 22 Momme silk is substantially more robust and long-lasting than common 19 Momme or lighter alternatives. It is a key indicator of quality and value in Authentic Silk.
What is 'Grade 6A' Mulberry Silk, and is it the best?
Yes, Grade 6A represents the highest quality grade in the silk industry. It is awarded to the finest, longest, and most continuous Mulberry Silk fibers without any major imperfections. Using Grade 6A silk ensures superior smoothness, strength, and a consistent, luxurious luster that lower grades cannot match.
Is your Authentic Silk ethically produced and safe?
Absolutely. Our Authentic Silk is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, which is a globally independent testing system. This certification verifies that our silk is free from over 100 harmful substances, making it safe for human use and supporting responsible manufacturing practices.
